The 40th annual Penguin plunge was held in Del Mar on New Year's Day 2026 on a very rainy morning, and although there were less participants than usual, it was still a festive atmosphere. For those who don't know, the penguin plunge is an event where everyone runs into the ocean together like a penguin to celebrate the new year. Afterwards, participants get donuts, hot drinks, and a certificate proving you did the plunge. The Penguin Plunge is in its 40th year and many people have attended the event for years. People dress up and enjoy shaking off the old year and celebrating the start of a new year with friends and family. Now if you would like to go to the penguin plunge next year it's hosted on 17th street in Del Mar and run by the City of Del Mar. The actual plunge takes place at 11am.
